Carers Christmas crisis toolkit
Carers deal with an enormous amount throughout the year, but this season in particular can be difficult because many organisations close down for the Christmas period or only have a limited service. That is why it is vital to be prepared and have everything you need in one place should an emergency hit.
This is a guide or a checklist for carers to get ready and have all the essential information.
1. Create an emergency contacts list
You may have this already as a carer, but always worth having to hand the below contacts:
● GP and out-of-hours medical services:
○ NHS 111 for non-emergencies
○ Local GP out-of-hours contact number
● Local council emergency support: For financial assistance, housing or social care support: In North Tyneside call the Welfare Team on 0191 643 2777 and select option 2, or the Out-of-Hours-Team on 03303337475 on the public holidays, evening and weekends.
● Mental health helplines: Samaritans offers 24-hour emotional support by calling 08457 90 90 90
● Mental Health Crisis Resolution Team: NHS support for someone (and their carer) experiencing a mental health crisis. Open 24/7 over Christmas: 0800 652 2861 or 0303 123 1146
● Energy companies Priority Service Register: Register to make sure your household is contacted and reconnected in the event of power cuts.
● Shelter (for housing emergencies): 0808 800 4444
● Make sure your phone is charged and has emergency contacts saved.
2. Medication and medical supplies
● Make sure you have enough stock of all necessary medications.
● Create a list of current medications and dosages.
● Find local pharmacies open during the Christmas period:
● Ensure the medical information of the person you care for is accessible for emergencies.
3. Food and household essentials
● Stock up on non-perishable food items and easy-to-prepare meals.
● Know the location of nearby foodbanks and their holiday schedules. Many are closed over Christmas so you might have to use the Council Welfare/Out of Hours Service: 0191 643 2777 and select option 2, or the Out-of-Hours-Team on 03303337475.
● Keep emergency supplies: bottled water, flashlights, and batteries.
4. Wellbeing plan
● Arrange backup support from family members or friends if you need a break.
● Identify nearby respite services and understand their holiday availability.
● Plan time to yourself amongst the Christmas activities and do things that make you feel calm and happy.
● Keep contact numbers to hand for for mental health support groups and peer networks.
● Set up regular check-ins with family or friends to reduce isolation.
Preparation reduces stress and helps you manage unexpected challenges effectively. This toolkit ensures you’re ready to handle crises while continuing to provide the best care possible.
