The 2024 Budget and Carers

The 2024 budget brings important changes for carers. On the plus side, the Carer Allowance earnings limit will increase, allowing carers to earn up to £196 per week while still receiving support. This change allows carers to work 16 hours on the living wage and still receive Carer Allowance. The extension of the Household Support Fund provides some support for carers in dire financial need.

However, the budget also raises concerns. How will care services cover the increased costs of Employer National Insurance Contributions and the National Living Wage? This could also result in more expensive services for people who pay towards their care. The Carers Trust have said while there is additional funding for social care, it’s arguably not enough to meet the long-standing challenges in the sector.

Further action is needed to ensure carers receive adequate support and financial stability.
